Heather Aked Emceed the meeting today. She opened by talking about education and reminding us that this month is “Basic Education and Literacy Month.”

We had an acapella rendition of “O'Canada”

Announcements:
  • Mary C. got a letter from David and Batia who are still with their son in the hospital in Israel. Their son is still in good spirits despite his deteriorating condition. They spend every day with him and his children (their grand children).
  •  Lynn M. Made the announcement that she has started medical treatment and feels “like a million bucks” and then donated slightly less than that to the club!
  • John J. made an announcement to the flag committee. Because of the celebration of the Queen’s longest reign, the flags can be left out for another few days. This was the final weekend this year for the flag program.
  •  Pablo distributed pamphlets for the Chamber Music Series he will be playing in this fall and winter season. Four concerts all different and wonderful will be played on September 12th , October 24th, November 14th and December 12th. Tickets can be purchased at the McPherson Box Office (1-888-717-6121) or Ivy’s Book Store (250-598-2713) or at the door. For more information email diemahlerenterprises.com

Joan F. was the celebrations master once more!
  • She reminded us of the homework she gave us and asked the crowd what the four words meant. Joan P. was one of the only hands in the air and quick to answer correctly (saving the rest of us). Global Rotary rewards is a program we should take advantage of, especially MOO, where we can get free business cards.
  • Steve S. was fined for putting the flags up in the wrong position today for the set up of the meeting. Joan claims she had to fix them.
  • Heather A. was fined because she put a picture up on Facebook, of her garde,n but most of the photo was obstructed by a cluttered windowsill.
  •  Those who have not been out to Saanich to one of the farms to purchase produce, paid a dollar.
  •  Those who attended Oak Bay High school were deemed “Old” because their school no longer exists and they were made to pay a dollar.
  •  All those who didn't know how long the Queen has been on the throne were fined. (The answer was 63 years and 218 days making it the longest reign in English history).
  • Those who did not send a child to school today were asked o pay a dollar.
  • To remember and celebrate the lives of Aylin and Gabe and their mother’s recent deaths everyone was asked to pay a dollar and spend a moment of reflection.

Happy birthday to Irene Lavigne! She donated $7.50 (for 75 years of life) towards Polio Plus. She  also shared with us that she is a polio survivor and that this cause is very near to her heart.

Tom L. Asked us what the opposite of “diversity” is…. The answer is “University”
