Beer and more: Meeting of November 6, 2012

Check out photos from Tree Appreciation Day held at Uplands Park on the weekend here.

Meeting of November 6, 2012 reported by John Jordan.

Thanks to David Sills for producing the new "Rotary Club of Oak Bay Roster".

Guests: Murray Rankin and Jayne Ducker, guests of Jessica Van Der Veen
Eric Young,  Rotaract member from Victoria/UVic, guest of David Phillip.
Dennis Sutton,  Rotary of Victoria-Harborside.
Jim Dodds of Vancouver Island Brewery, guest speaker.

Mary Canty (left) described the memorial service of former Club member, Nels Granewall, who died recently. John Playfair was again welcomed into the Club, having completed his “new member” period. President Joan described the installation of 2 bike racks, funded by our club, at Uplands Park and Cattle Point Park. [To learn more about the history of this donation, read page 3 of the August 13 Oak Bay Council meeting minutes.] Joan will place a wreath at the Uplands Veterans Memorial at 11am on November 11. She encouraged members to attend that ceremony.
Guest Dennis Sutton of Victoria Harbourside announced that his club will be offering Christmas fruit cakes for sale again this year. He offered samples that he hopes will remind previous buyers and encourage new ones to order them again. Heather reminded all of the Merrython event Sun, Dec 2, 10 am, starting from the Henderson Center. Both runners and walkers are invited to participate in an 8km run or a 4km walk. There is a 1km event for kids. We are encouraged to distribute the word and registration forms to friends and co-workers. The committee is still looking for a few sponsors. Speak to Jessica if you have an interest. David Phillips urged members to consider personal donations for the portable x-ray machine which would benefit John Snively’s work in Guatemala so much. Donations (choose "Latin America - Guatemala Dental Health) can be made directly to the InnovativeCommunities.Org website which will produce a tax receipt immediately through email.

Jessica Van Der Veen, as Fines Master, created a flurry of participation by eliciting examples of “most hated Jargon.”  It was, like, awesome! Bob Schelle (I think) won the draw.

Neil Madsen introduced our speaker, Jim Dodds, General Manager of Vancouver Island Brewery.  Jim described how the craft brewing industry has expanded in Victoria. Vancouver Island Brewery has built its brand around its local supply chain as well as Island people and landscapes in all its labeling.  Above: David Maxwell thanked speaker Jim Dodds.
